Question by moi: At present there are many different computer operating systems in existence. If OS were standardised, give one?
At present there are many different computer operating systems in existence. If OS were standardised, give one benefit for each of the following:

a) the user of the computers
b) the manufacturer of computers
c) developers of software for computers

Give one technical reason why this is not likely to happen.

Best answer:

Answer by Michael
I would go for snow leopard OS

A) This will be for people like me who like using movies and film and editing films and photo. This is also a good system for music

B) I would have to say acer or hp. Always found them very reliable and good value for money.

C) Windows because there are loads more programs than there are for mac but macs dont have half the problems because apple design the machine and most of the software, which windows dont as its mostly 3rd parties creating the software.

This is not likely to happen because apple would not let there software used on a windows machine.

Add your own answer in the comments!

Dr. Joe Hummel presents Async and Parallel Programming in .NET
www.pluralsight-training.net/community/blogs/drjoe/

Need to make your apps more responsive? Run faster? On today’s multicore hardware, async and parallel programming may be the answer. This talk will introduce the new Task-oriented programming model in .NET 4, discuss its underlying execution, and demonstrate some of the higher-level constructs and patterns supported by the Task Parallel Library. A number of examples will be presented; and if time permits, we’ll compare and contrast parallel programming in C# (imperative) vs. F# (functional) vs. LINQ (declarative).

Bio:
Joe is an author, consultant and tenured professor of Computer Science, with a PhD from the U. of California, Irvine. He has been specializing in Microsoft technologies since 1992, in particular Microsoft’s parallel and high-performance computing initiatives. This includes Windows HPC Server, cluster programming (MPI, SOA, LINQ to HPC, Excel), and many-core programming (TPL, PPL, OpenMP, CUDA). Joe has co-authored two books on Windows development, hosted more than 60 MSDN webcasts, and taught courses worldwide. He works for Pluralsight LLC, the U. of California, Irvine, and as a private consultant. When he’s not working, Joe is an avid sailor, residing in the Chicago area with his wife and daughter.

Between a Hollywood superstar and a voice actor, the latter realistically works harder. It is quite tough for a voice actor to put feelings and emotions to what he is reading, all the while knowing that he’s not seen on screen. The voice actor must be able to empathize with the character that he portrays and make sure that he breathes life into the script. It is in this area where voice over training is essential.

Voice over artists are able to master the craft of voice acting and find good employment in this field by undergoing voice over training. Thousands of animated TV shows, cartoons, radio advertisements, web shows and movies are produced on a regular basis. Take note that about 20 to 30 characters make up the cast of just one movie or TV show. The opportunities for a voice talent basically abound internationally.

Voice over training course – the fundamental skills that you ought to possess

One of the most important tools of the trade is diction. The student must have perfect enunciation and for that reason must attend speech classes to get his diction properly. Every voice over actor has two roles to fulfill – “lending voice” and “acting.” This means that getting a perfect diction is not enough to be able to join a voice over training, enrolling in an acting course is also essential for the student.

What does a voiceover training course teach?

Assessing and interpreting commercial copy for announcer and real-person roles are learned by the student. He also comes to understand how to interpret narrative copy and gets the hang of technical copy as well. Students learn how to coordinate the mind, mouth and voice effectively, so that they may be able to sound really true to the character they are playing. Taking direction is also learned by the student.

A great voice actor training program makes students read, record, play back, listen, and then do it repeatedly until they get it right. Students warm-up and perform vocal exercises and learn techniques like timing, inflection, and articulation. They understand how to preserve their voice health. When students are already half-way into the voice over training course, they become skilled at using and adjusting pitch, tone, volume and delivery speed to meet the needs of various types of jobs.

Once a student completes the training, he learns how to market his skills, tap proper contacts, and land voice over work. The course instructors also help them create a voice over demo for their portfolio. A solid voice over training program gives students the opportunity to work in a real studio and fully grasp what they should and shouldn’t do in a sound booth and when behind the microphone.

Choosing a voice over training course

There are two aspects to voice training. Students who are interested in selling must opt for a commercial voice over course. Commercial voice overs are used for selling. Several of the areas that call for this type of voice overs are radio ads, TV advertisements, phone and other media features. Selling skills are also covered by a voice over course considering that all commercial voice overs sell a service or a product. Acting skills are not covered by this course. Students who are interested in showbiz must decide on a TV and movie voice over and dubbing course. Lip-synching is required by such courses, hence, the voice over talent also must have to master acting skills.

To conclude, all the world’s a stage and we must play a part. So, if you wish to play your part as a voice actor, enroll for a well-known voice actor training program and learn how to raise your voice.

Online training means promotion points

By C. Todd Lopez
Army News Service

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Soldiers can now earn up to 16 promotion points for completing language instruction with the Headstart2 language training program.

The Headstart2 software uses digitally animated characters involved in military scenarios to teach reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in any of 16 target languages. Soldiers must register for an Army Training Requirements and Resources System account, known as ATTRS, to earn points in any of those target languages.

“It gives a Soldier, a Marine, an Airman, a Sailor or a civilian — who doesn’t have background in the language, a fairly decent understanding of the culture, a basic understanding of the sound and script, and what we would describe as survival-level language,” said Col. Danial Pick, commandant of the Defense Language Institute.

The HeadStart2 program was developed at the Defense Language Institute.

Pick said the program teaches a “military-focused vocabulary,” designed with requirements from both the Army and the Marine Corps, to help Soldiers and Marines complete the types of missions they will be engaged in during deployments.

He said specifically there is a focus on conducting patrols, cordon and search, medical treatment, as well as “interrogatives and vocabulary that allow squads of Soldiers and Marines to ask critical survival-type questions in local populations, as well as have an understanding of culture.”

Being able to engage effectively with local populations, Pick said, enables Soldiers and Marines to “identify and isolate enemy elements in a population and more effectively deliver aid and development to friendly forces in the countryside and the cities.”

For an average user, the language program takes between 80 and 100 hours of self-directed study. The language programs can be accessed online through the DLI website or through service-specific portals, like Army Knowledge Online. The software can either be downloaded and installed on a computer or used online. Soldiers in a remote location, without access to a high-speed network, can also order the disks directly from DLI.

The Headstart2 program, first introduced in 2006 with Iraqi Arabic, is available now in 16 languages. Iraqi Arabic, Pashto, and Dari are available through the Army Learning Management System. Urdu, Persian Farsi, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese European, Russian, French, German, Spanish, Uzbek, Kurmanji, Swahili and Portuguese Brazilian are available through the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, though those are in the process of being moved to ALMS.

An additional 11 languages are under development for HeadStart2, Pick said.

Soldiers who complete the Headstart2 program in any language can get up to 16 promotion points in ATRRS. For languages hosted on ALMS, those points are posted to ATRRS. For Languages hosted on DLIFLC, Soldiers will need to print out the certificate of training to apply for the credit.

“When a Soldier completes Headstart2, he or she gets credit in ATRRS, which not only tells the unit commander at a glance who has or has not completed pre-deployment language and culture training, but it also gives that young Soldier credit in terms of promotion points.”

The most popular of the language training programs are Dari, Iraqi Arabic and Pashto. Between June 2010 and June 2011, for instance, some 33,000 individuals used the Dari language program to train for deployment to Afghanistan. But Pick said others may use the program for non-deployment purposes. His own son, he said, used the program to augment his high school Spanish language training.

The Defense Language Institute developed the Headstart2 program completely in-house, Pick said. There’s also another program available online through DLI called the Global Language Online Support System, or GLOSS, that includes training modules to help users achieve “level three” ability in a target language. And within the next year, Pick said, DLI will release a follow-on training program for Headstart2, called “Gateway.” The first target language for Gateway will be Swahili.

While HeadStart2 provides Soldiers with a good starting point for language training, the Army has a much more robust option available to prepare Soldiers for deployment: the General Purpose Force Language Training Detachment.
